Apply what you have learned from Chapter 3 in Business and Technical Communication and in our class by creating a cover letter and resume.
In the sections that follow, you will find two fictitious internship postings. Customize your cover letter (in block format) and resume for the posting that aligns with your major. Address your letter for the fictitious firm of your choice to: Chris Ryan, Director of Recruiting. (Still send it to me with the same title, even if you choose to apply to a real position.)
Submission and Deadline
Submit your completed assignment via eLearning before class begins on the date specified in the syllabus. Ensure that your cover letter and resume are in one MS Word document (PDF and other formats will not be accepted) with a page break following your cover letter and before your resume.
You will be graded on how well you follow directions and on the quality of your cover letter and resume and for the rhetorical case you build. We will view it from the standpoint of an employer considering your candidacy. All work should be original; you should not plagiarize another’s cover letter or resume.
If you have a real job opening to which you wish to apply, you may tailor your cover letter and resume for that posting. At the end of your assignment submission, provide a copy of the job posting so that your instructor may see how well your documents are tailored to the job posting. Please note: This should not include any correspondence you have already had with any employer; it must be new.
Similarly, if you have a company and a type of role you may wish to apply for in the future, provide your instructor with the name of the company and a description of the role from one of their postings.
If you would like to amend one of the fictitious openings on the previous slides in order to align it more with your major, send your instructor your amended description along with your cover letter and resume.
