We’re going to watch part of a documentary in today’s class and then break it into parts to understand what it does and how it does it.

Instructions:

  1. Documentary Screening (30-40 minutes):
    • Watch a Documentary: Screen a documentary that explores the global influence of Bollywood or the localization of Indian media in global markets. One option could be The Evolution of Bollywood or a similar film that captures the globalization of Indian cinema.
  2. Group Work - Critique & Analysis (20 minutes):
    • Form Groups: After the screening, divide into small groups of 3-4 students.
    • Critique the Documentary: Discuss the documentary’s portrayal of Bollywood’s cultural context and its global adaptation strategies. Focus on how effectively the film addresses cultural sensitivity, localization, and the blending of traditional and global elements.
    • Relate to Your Project: Each group should then relate these observations to their own projects. How can the strategies seen in the documentary be applied to your own localization plan? What cultural elements will be crucial for your project?
  3. Develop Localization Plan (20 minutes):
    • Group Discussion: Based on the insights from the documentary and your group critique, outline a localization plan for your project. This should include language adaptation, cultural references, and audience engagement strategies specific to your target market.
    • Collaborate and Refine: Work with your group members to refine these strategies, drawing on each other’s perspectives to ensure cultural sensitivity and relevance.
  4. Final Reflection (10 minutes):
    • Journal Entry: Reflect in your weekly journal on how the documentary and group discussions influenced your understanding of cultural context and localization. Consider how these insights will shape your final project.
