Step 1
Find a case study related to content moderation, disinformation, or platform governance. Examples include Taiwan's digital democracy initiatives, content moderation during Nigeria's #EndSARS movement, the implications of the EU's Digital Services Act, or Facebook's role in ethnic violence in Ethiopia.
Step 2
Analyze your chosen case study by summarizing the main issues and events, identifying key stakeholders such as tech companies, governments, NGOs, and users, and discussing the challenges faced along with the strategies employed.
Relate your findings to "The Trauma Floor" by comparing the experiences of content moderators, contrasting the operational and ethical considerations, and exploring how global contexts alter the dynamics of content moderation.
Remember, we’ve discussed three points of change:
- Governmental:
- Corporate: Laws and regulations that are enforced against a company (typically with stiff monetary penalties)
- Personal: Laws that are enforced on people (with fines and jail time)
- Organizational: The behavior, rules, and products of the company may change to prevent harms
- Personal: People can change behaviors or consumption to reduce harms
Step 3
Finally, prepare an outline or bullet points that highlight the key points of your case study, the insights gained from your comparison, and a potential solution or recommendation. Base your solution on:
- Your Case Study
- “The Trauma Floor”
- Current or developing laws and regulations
Step 4
In your groups, determine how labor will affect each of the ‘media products’ you are pitching. How does labor affect your production, distribution, or content? How does do our current legal or organization response affect your project (either the project or its marketing).
Step 5 (eLearning)
- Turn in your outline & case study group notes with a recommendation to improve. I’d also like to know how your group decided on the recommended actions.
- Tell me how your project changed based on the recommendations, laws, etc.
- What struck you as interesting or insightful from this week’s readings? Where did you get confused?
